NEW! DINO DIG
Based on paleontology, the study of prehistoric life, DINO DIG has been created to give museum visitors a glimpse into the work of a paleontologist. Dig for dino bone replicas that are true in size and color to what you might find at a real dig site! Match your fossil find to reveal the type of bone and name of the creature you hold in your hands. Measure, record and draw your fossil find to scale at our Paleo Lab.
Look into the life of these captivating creatures at DINO DIG Exploration Stations. What did dinos eat? Which creatures we know today are Living Fossils? Unearth your inner paleontologist as you uncover how dinosaurs became fossils and how prehistoric creatures impacted the world we know today.
Cuddle up in our “pond” with a dino book in our Book Bog, color a dino mask and play Dino Dress Up, or roar it up at our Prehistoric Play station. Don’t forget to take home our Fossil Hunting in Maine brochure to continue the discoveries after you leave the museum!
Nature Trails
Explore Maine's ecosystem along a 20-foot waterway. Send a boat down the river and create hydropower. For a bird's eye view, climb to the top of a two-story tree house, and discover live wetland creatures in Turtle Alley.
TradeWinds
An exciting new exhibit about Maine's global connections. Maine is linked to all corners of the world in unexpected ways. With a focus on Brazil, Japan, and Italy, you will discover similarities & differences in cultures and customs, geography, commerce, communication, & transportation.
Booktown
Walk through a village where every doorway leads you into the pages of a Maine children's literary classic. Have your picture taken atop Wilbur the pig from Charlotte's Web, be the skipper of the Tidely-Idley or the librarian in Miss Rumphius' library.
Sounds Abound
Discover the world of music in a sound studio with karaoke, record a video, or listen to Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star in different musical styles.
Artscape
Dazzle, create, learn about pattern, color, kinetic art and sculpture in our visual art exhibit space, including an art studio for drop-in activities. Make your own luminous designs. Swing a pendulum drawing board and watch the patterns appear. No two designs will be the same.
Mission: Discovery
Hands-on exhibits explore gravity, acceleration, robotics, astronomy and more. "Freeze" your shadow, grab a "moon rock," and race balls down the tracks.
Body Journey
Go inside a giant head and investigate the "inner you" by flossing the giant teeth, pumping the giant heart and traveling inside a giant intestine. Then take a trip to "The Doctor's In" where you get to be the "Doc," while taking care of the babies or looking at real X-rays. Any healthy advice for your patients?
