Exploration Stations

Once you've dug up your prehistoric find in the Dig Pit, check out Fossil Match to reveal the type of bone and name of the creature you hold in your hands. Measure, record and draw your fossil find to scale at our Paleo Lab.

Look into the life of these captivating creatures at other DINO DIG Exploration Stations. What did dinos eat? Which creatures we know today are Living Fossils? Unearth your inner paleontologist as you uncover how dinosaurs became fossils and how prehistoric creatures impacted the world we know today.

Cuddle up in our “pond” with a dino book in our Book Bog, color a dino mask and play Dino Dress Up, or roar it up at our Prehistoric Play station. Don’t forget to take home our Fossil Hunting in Maine brochure to continue the discoveries after you leave the museum!

Check our website often; we are developing special DINO DIG educational offerings related to the content of the Dig Pit and Exploration Stations. For example, we are looking forward to a special “Plant Your Own Dino Salad Bar” offering in partnership with Sprague’s Nursery. Sprague’s generously donated the prehistoric plants for our DINO DIG Salad Bar station. Later this summer, a real-life paleontologist from Stoney Knoll Archeological Supplies is coming to the museum to set up a dig site in our dig pit, just like you would find at a real archeological site! Learn how to use a sifter and real archeological tools!

The Maine Discovery Museum is loaded with kid's activities! Looking for things to do with children? The Maine Discovery Museum is a great place to find things to do with kids of all ages!
