The Badge Presentation is FREE with an Overnight visit. They depend on seasonal availability of materials and availability of presenter. For other details about pricing and group size requirements please call us at (207)262-7200 or email us at info@mainediscoverymuseum.org You may choose from the following selection of Badge Presentations prior to your visit. Only one presentation topic will be prepared, although we may offer several sessions of that one topic, depending on the group size. In order to best serve your group, your selection needs to be confirmed NO LATER than two weeks prior to your overnight visit; in the case of multiple troops, the majority vote will decide. Although this program was designed with scouts in mind, any group, classroom or extended family can request these presentations. The same prices and group size requirements will apply. Putting on the Play Children can let their imaginations run wild while learning how to develop their own script or props, and then present the play in our Baseball Diamond or in their own mini theatre. Select from two plays and separate into groups to create props, build the set and apply stage make-up. Scouts can work toward their public speaking or theatre badges. Up to 15 children per session, up to two sessions, all ages. Note: this presentation is available only for Overnights, since it requires more time and more use of the museum. Nature's Beauty - Jewelry Design Workshop We use porcupine quills, shark teeth or periwinkle shells and fine glass beads to design and make one-of-a-kind necklaces, bracelets and pendants. Children will learn about native traditions while exploring different wiring and beading techniques. Quills and shells are seasonally available, so check which materials we will have on hand when you book this presentation. Scouts can work toward their jewelry making or folk arts badges. Up to 26 children per session, up to three sessions, all ages. Jiminy Cricket! Children can observe these fascinating little creatures eat, communicate and interact. During this presentation, children will learn about animal behavior and communication and how to set up a proper habitat. Each child will make his/her own habitat, learn how to take care of the crickets and take home a little pet cricket. Scouts can work toward a science, animal or pet care badge. Up to 26 children, up to three sessions, all ages. Rocket Power Working in teams, children will build rocket racers and hovercrafts while learning about Newton's laws or engineering and aero technology. We will race and fly the finished crafts to see who made the fastest, strongest or most cleverly designed racers or rockets. Scouts can work toward a science or technology badge. Up to 20 children, up to two sessions, recommended for grade 2+ Lotions and Potions Children explore practical uses for chemistry by mixing their own hand cream, bath fizzies and body glitter. We'll discover make-up and beauty products through the ages from Ancient Egypt to today. Each child has an opportunity to design a unique fragrance, and gets to take home several museum-made beauty products. Scouts can work toward a science in action or hobbies badge. Up to 26 children, up to 3 sessions, all ages. Bubble Gum Making Each child will make his/her own batch of delicious bubble gum while finding out about the history of this sticky treat. Children will get a hands-on demonstration of chemistry in action by mixing and blending soluble and non-soluble ingredients into flavorful gum. The oftentimes surprising and funny history of gum and the importance of good dental health habits are all part of this 'sweet' workshop. Scouts can work toward a science in action, technology, health and fitness or culture badge. Up to 26 children, up to 3 sessions, all ages. Reptiles Alive Maine is home to 34 different types of reptiles and amphibians from the poisonous pickerel frog to the endangered box turtle. Children will learn why all over the world these ancient creatures are disappearing, even right here in Maine! They will observe and touch real live reptiles like snakes and skinks, compare turtle shells and even check out real dragon eggs. Using live animals and fascinating artifacts, we'll explore the topics of adaptation, habitats, conservation and animal defenses to dispel the myths surrounding these beautiful creatures who share our planet. Scouts can work toward a science, animal or pet care badge. Up to 30 children, up to 3 sessions, all ages.
